MOONBABIES are the sought-after collection of wearable art pieces by designer and creative entrepreneur Ava Minsky Foxman. The distinctive, handcrafted animated figures, fashioned semi-precious stones and exotic materials, embody the inventiveness and sense of aesthetics present throughout Ava’s life.
Ava grew up in the entertainment business as part of the illustrious Minsky family – her father Harold, the theatrical impresario and her mother Dardy, the successful costume designer and artist. Ava was “Eloise,” her childhood spent in the luxury hotels of Vegas and New York, in the world of celebrities and showgirls. Surrounded by glamour and elaborate costumes, these influences later resulted in her decision to pursue fashion design. Trained at the Fashion Institute, Ava began her career as a womens-wear clothing designer.
Ava’s design career was put on hold when her life long friend Nancy Moore called and asked her to join her in saving a struggling L.A. employment agency, The Job Factory. In order to rise above the competition, the two transformed the traditional agency into a successful enterprise by specializing in very unusual job placement for “creative and chronically unemployed” actors. The Job Factory listing ranged from Fortune Cookie restuffer to Rubber Nipple Model and Mosquito Bitee. And today, 20 years later, it’s still the agency of choice for the entertainment industry.
When Ava joined life forces with Philadelphia-born surgeon, Scott Foxman, she returned to the East Coast to begin a family. During her 10 year “mom sabbatical”, Ava was always creating projects for her two children. Thanks to a “brainstorm in a snowstorm” - the idea conceived with the intention of entertaining the children- resulted in a project that literally “snowballed.” That fun, creative project, launched the first family of MOONBABIES, a collection of richly beaded pins and necklaces. Shortly thereafter, “numerous requests for MOONBABIES from friends and relatives mushroomed into a booming jewelry business,” confesses Ava.
The new MOONBABIES business presented another opportunity to work with partner and pal Nancy Moore, who relocated from the West Coast to join Ava and build the Moonbabies dream. Their mission: “to create & contribute”.
Today, MOONBABIES are a favorite with department and specialty stores as one of the hottest new accessory trends. The Moonbaby family has expanded to include Moonbaby Jr’s, which are smaller and brighter pin/necklace combinations for “tweens”. Also new to the family are Pointless Adornments, which are very trendy beaded bracelets, and the Taylor Moon Collection, which features fashion forward necklaces, drop necklaces, lariats, earrings an bracelets made with semi-precious stones, and accented with sterling silver or 14K gold.
True to philanthropic form, Minsky Foxman and Moore earmark a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each MOONBABY to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, in the spirit of charity and preserving the health of this country’s most precious resource- the children.
